The firewall comparison table at http://www.agnitum.com/php_scripts/compare.php From this table ZA Free comes out poorly with only 9 points and the Pro 16, Sygate Free & Pro 12 points, and Outpost Free 21 points and Pro 26
For information I use F-Prot (http://www.f-prot.com/) (about 25 pounds per year) and am fairly satisfied. It looks though that AVG is becoming the favourite. Both of these do the job well, without all the bloat and marketting drive of the big two.
I would recommend AVG anti-virus from http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_index.html which I set up on my wife's machine about 8 months ago with no trouble at all, and ZoneAlarm firewall from http://www.zonelabs.com/default.htm, which I have had on my machine for nearly 2 years now.
Pegasus Mail (http://www.pmail.com/) does what it is meant to do properly, without having to use any part of IE. It seems totally devoid of the OE security holes as well. Only available for Windows (and DOS) though, but it is totally free and devoid of any adverts. You can if you wish buy a manual set ($30) which is in effect a donation, but there is no pressure to do this. by the way
Eudora email software and the extensive manual can be downloaded free with a small advertisement window, or cheap if you do not like the advertisement. This has powerful header and body text filter settings and works with Windows PC and Mac but relies on IE for reading HTML emails
Take a look at Onetel (http://www.onetel.net.uk/). I pay £12.99 per month with no call charges at all.
Music CD Recorder 3.0 from Databecker I used an older version of this software to "remix" my vinyl. It was very easy to adjust the noise filter to get rid of the pops and crackles and equalise or is it normalise the recording. It does inter track detection if the disc is not too noisy.
