A few examples of my work and
achievements
- Specification and development of an ultra broad-band 55MHz
50kW power tetrode based power amplifier for use with
fast cavity voltage feedback
- System level specification, tender evaluation and
subcontract supervision, for a wide range of equipment
from klystron power amplifiers to high stability high
current DC magnet power supplies, waveguide systems and
special waveguide components
- Electronics design at the system, unit and circuit board
level. At the circuit board level this is predominantly
analogue and RF electronics and "glue logic"
- Design and implementation of personnel access systems for
radiation controlled areas
- Project planning, cost estimating, resource estimating,
progress monitoring and project management - assisted by
tools such as spread sheets and Microsoft Project
- System troubleshooting - countless instances of having to
quickly grasp the complexities of large and intricate
systems and then define simple tests to isolate problems
to more manageable sub-assemblies
- Technical writing, preparation of user documentation
including a co-ordination/editorial role
- Part of a programming team which firstly developed a
complete circuit analysis, logic simulation and circuit
synthesis package before becoming responsible for a
customer support group with marketing for the product
- Resource manager, performing future planning and handling
near term demands for a group of engineers, matching
skills to assignments and setting priorities - agreeing
man-power budgets with internal "customers" and
encouraging a culture of "on-time" and "to
budget"
- Talent spotter and mentor - I have recruited and
developed a number of people who are now key to the
success of one organization
- I produced one company's first health and safety policy
document and initiated many new procedures in connection
with the launch of the HSE's "Six Pack" and
COSHH
- In addition to providing the entire RF system, I
developed the necessary control algorithms and proved
these in my implementation of a dynamic matching system
on the World's first compact super-conducting synchrotron
- the success proved that it is a practical alternative
to the expense of the conventional power feed approach
using one or more high power circulators
- Following my analysis of super-power (1.5MW) tetrode
operation with mismatched loads I specified the dynamics
of voltage agile high voltage supplies - this system has
provided the ICRF heating system on JET since it was
commissioned in the mid 80s
- Author of papers presented at conferences on Fusion power
Technology and Particle Accelerators. Cited as co-author
on many others
