String Theory
This September 2, 2003 New York Times article does a good job of summarizing the history and specifics of string theory and the paradox of its many offerings.  The Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics is home to some of the most intense thinking with regards to theoretical physics in the world.  More popularly palatable, NOVA offers another site called, The Elegant Universe.  The virtual home of string theory gives the basics on the topic as well as what scientists have found so far and where they're headed next. Probably the most definitive site devoted to the topic. Another informative look at superstring theory is provided at MIT  and offers a great tutorial on strings in addition to a glossary and reference list  "Beyond Einstein, from the Big Bang to Black Holes." povided by NASA,offers insights into the history and structure of the universe.
